There are many options for you to choose from, but if you are so new to this that the word ‘affiliate’ has just been added to your vocabulary, then let's get you started.
You may have seen some advertising recently on one of the many social media platforms about the concept of affiliate marketing, how to earn online, or wanting passive income from home.
So here you are doing some random searching for something to buy that you have had your eye on. Did you know that this is part of Marketing 101? It has now become a conscious thought that you now need this item and you start dreaming about it, seeing it all around you, comparing it, pricing it up, etc. It keeps popping into your online feed too, and these little tantalising offers start idly coming into your scrolling feed.
This is called product marketing 101, which I learned in my tertiary studies. Think of something like a hairstyle you like, and you start seeing others wearing the same style. You want to have your hair cut the same, and you ask around as to which hairdresser is best to have yours done by. Your friend suggests the best hairdresser that will do it for you, and off you trot and book yourself in. Does your friend get paid for referring you to this hairdresser? No? Why not?
What about when you are on holiday or have moved to a new city and you want to eat a certain type of food? Let's say, Italian and you ask around, and your local guide or work colleague suggests the best Italian restaurant for you. Do they get paid for this recommendation? No. Why not? This is the traditional way of doing referral marketing, but now that life and technology have moved on, we are now looking online for our ideas, products, or services to solve our particular problems or needs.
So back to you scrolling on your device looking for that wonderful thing (product or service) you want to buy or consider buying. After much analysis and selling the idea to yourself, you bite the bullet and click the buy now button, drop in your payment details, and wait for this purchase to arrive. It might be a mail or instant download. Now you could have bought from the source of the product or service, just like a brick-and-mortar store, but instead, it's their online merchant or website. Or increasingly, you may have bought your item from an affiliate. How does that make you feel, buying it from—not the real manufacturer or provider, but a 3rd-party seller instead?
Here is a very simplistic version of the traditional seller-to-buyer process and the end price the consumer pays.
You do end up paying the same retail price, and yes, it may be that the retailer is no longer in this process and that the manufacturer is most likely receiving more $$ as the creator of their product. It is a win-win for the manufacturer or merchant, as they are known in the affiliate world, and also a win for the affiliate.
This article is not about the demise of the retail industry; it needs to be addressed, I know, but I’m showing how, at the end of the day, the consumer still receives their product or service for the same price, and yet they have just purchased from a different source.
How Does Affiliate Marketing Work?
When you scroll on your device, you may see different promotional ads; some may resonate with you, and some will not, if you choose to just skip. So what is happening here? You are merely screening through the masses of affiliates that are promoting their unique links (which identify them to the merchant/provider) for the services or products that they are pitching. The affiliate will get paid a little bit of commission (from the merchant/provider) for you to join or buy that product or service. It is happening more and more and can be quite easy to set up and for you to promote something, or from a manufacturer/creator you choose to align yourself to, and in doing so, you can begin to create a multitude of income streams from the various affiliate links you promote.
Ok, so that is how it works? So, where are you on this journey? If you are at the beginning of exploring if this idea is for you, and may I say that I was there too, in early 2023? However, for me, I was even at the prequel stage. If you think of year 1 at primary school, then I was in the year before that, either a new entrant or pre-school. Affiliate marketing was not even on my radar.
I knew I wanted to embark on something online, but I was not sure what. As it happened to me, I discovered a worldwide renowned learning platform while scrolling online and jumped into this self-paced learning program that coaches you on the ‘how to’ of the online world.

Inside the learning modules, I discovered the various online business models that are often used and how people create for themselves an online income stream. One, of course, was affiliate marketing, and it just so happens that the same program I signed up for also offers an affiliate program. Many choose to take the affiliate path and become affiliates for this program, as it helps in our understanding of the processes and putting into practice the learnings to date.
Some members choose to continue with their affiliate journey as digital marketers and broaden their offerings to include merchants or providers of other products or services. The commissions vary, but the process is the same. You will see through the learning platform that I have joined that once you familiarise yourself with the various systems and understand how it all works, you will find that the process is similar across all Affiliate merchants.
And before we delve into this further, I think we need to step back a little and work out the following.
What's Your Why?
You need to drill down and figure out your why. Why do you want to do this? Ask yourself the 'So what’ question to find out what your why is. When life may get difficult on this journey, and it certainly will, and you may not be achieving what you had first expected, then you should always come back to your why and revisit your reasons why you started this entrepreneurial journey.
Let me share my why and weave in my backstory, so you can see what it takes to do this and stick to your decision to start this journey.
In my childhood and teen years, I always thought that I had more to do in my life than what I was being confined to. I was always striving to do better, to find something, not to settle for mediocrity. I knew there was something more out there, and I certainly explored many side paths.
Your first cue... Does any of this resonate with you? Are your thoughts similar to these? This is the thought process of an aspiring entrepreneur. Did I know this? Of course not. I didn't know I have an entrepreneurial mindset.
In my adult years with a family of my own, life continues on, and now those children are grown and we enter this next stage of the entrepreneurial journey. However, my profession of being a qualified Adviser in the Financial Services industry in New Zealand came into being, as I now see evidence around me of why we need income in our future years and the assets we need to accumulate over time from which to provide us with an income source. The public pension is seldom enough for our retired folk to live on, and we need more than that base periodic sum to fund the gap. In my country, our statistics prove that a couple needs around $1200/week and yet our public pension is $760/week (married couple rate, as of April 2023). Every country differs, so this may not be applicable to you.
However, regardless of age stage, we all need an income source throughout our lives, and what better way than to work smarter, not harder, and use online income strategies to provide for us instead of the traditional means to earn?
I’m getting to my why... I’m starting to get discontented with my lot in life and more concerned with others who are struggling financially or lacking financial resources after some curveball event, and here I am thinking ahead and how one can earn more if they don’t have enough right now. Can we move to a cheaper country to live in for part of every year? Can we be more mobile and flexible in our job or lifestyle? Plus, my grown children were inquiring about different ways to earn money online, as they, like many other Millennials & Gen-Zers, do not want to work traditionally anymore. And COVID-19 has helped this phenomenon too, I’m sure. We were checking out these digital nomads hanging out in the likes of Bali (a cheaper place to live) and how they are earning. I was looking at retirees who are choosing to live in other countries to reduce their expenses, plus wondering about ebook writing to sell and share information, and this led me to start my own pathway to this online earning platform.
My Why - was not about the money for me at first, but wanting to help others learn how to earn online so I could share my learnings. Ultimately, for myself, I do want flexibility around my future and having the ability to live and work when and where I choose to, and so that for me is ‘Time and Financial Freedom’.
